St Andrews Beach Residence

Situated on an elevated 3,100m² site in the coastal setting of St Andrews Beach on the Mornington Peninsula, this Californian Bungalow has been thoughtfully restored over several years, transforming a neglected structure into a timeless beach house.

Originally relocated from Melbourne in two sections by a previous owner, the home was transported by truck and reassembled on site. Over the following decades, it was left exposed to the harsh coastal environment with little maintenance, resulting in significant deterioration. While demolition would have been a reasonable consideration given its condition, the owner recognised the home’s inherent character and potential, choosing instead to preserve and restore its original charm.

The comprehensive renovation encompassed both structural restoration and contemporary upgrades. Natural Dromana Quarry stone retaining walls were constructed to stabilise the site’s foundations, followed by complete restumping of the home. The exterior was renewed with new weatherboards, while all windows were replaced with double-glazed aluminium units, with the exception of the original front double-hung windows and entrance door, which were carefully retained and restored.

Extensive services upgrades included complete plumbing and electrical rewiring, new lighting, ceiling fans, ducted air conditioning, and the installation of solar panels. The house was transformed with a new kitchen and bathroom, a fireplace, fresh paint throughout, and the addition of a hot tub, creating a comfortable and energy-efficient coastal retreat that respects the heritage and character of the original home.
