Luna Palace Redevelopment

The oldest amusement park in Australia, Luna Park Melbourne opened in 1912 and is one of the oldest amusement parks left in the world. The park’s Great Scenic Railway is one of the world’s oldest continually operating roller coasters. The Luna Palace building is one of the original structures of the park which also opened in 1912.

After over a century of maintenance and modifications, the time had arrived for Luna Palace to receive a major renovation maintaining the spirit of the original design whilst introducing modern upgrades ensuring the life of the building is extended for further 100 years.

The brief included an expansion of the existing ground floor arcade and dodgems space and upstairs entertainment venue so the building can grow to host multiple sized events, creating an ongoing revenue stream for the park. Pamela Irving’s mosaics on the exterior of Luna Palace were carefully removed whilst the restoration was completed before being reinstalled. Restoration work was also undertaken on Luna Palace’s many iconic towers with architectural features renewed, repainted and relit.

Raven Architects were engaged to first relocate existing staff into newly constructed offices within the park, making way for the expanded Luna Palace redevelopment.
