project details
The Art Series Hotel Group showcases important Australian art through new and exciting boutique hotels dedicated and named after individual artists. Michael Johnson, a leading contemporary Australian artist, is the inspiration behind this particular hotel in Spring Hill, Queensland. Original artworks hang in the main foyer, public corridors and each hotel room with the interior design created to specifically reflect the work of the artist.
Built in 1967, the existing 14 level modernist style building was designed by architect Karl Langer and formerly occupied by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads up until 2012. Due to the buildings architectural and historical significance, it was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in June 2014.
Three new rooftop penthouses were added to the top of the existing tower form with continuous surrounding terraces and full height perimeter glazing. The penthouse level building envelope is setback from the existing tower façade, therefore allowing the existing building tower to remain as the predominant element. In order to accommodate the new floor level, one of the four existing lifts was extended to serve the newly created floor. The works included a new lift motor room and significant strengthening required to the existing structure to accommodate the extra level.
The penthouses include floor to ceiling perimeter glazing with large sliding openable facades, overly generous open plan living with 270 degree uninterrupted views of the Brisbane city skyline and leafy green surrounds. The interiors include wide oak floorboards, composite stone benchtops, mirror splashbacks, European appliances, and a mix of oak timber veneer and vinyl wrap joinery.
